Iguana Twins Surprise Pet Consultant...Twin Iguanas For The First Time In India.
A.R. Vijay, a pet consultant, was expecting to welcome a tiny iguana, but he was surprised with a bonus on Friday. In a very unusual occurrence, a Red Iguana’s egg that hatched had twins. “We have been breeding iguanas for the last five years and we have never come across such an incident. We are of course, quite delighted,” he said. Mr. Vijay, who owns a pet shop in Velachery and breeds iguanas, turtles, tortoises and bearded dragons, said the breeding season for the iguana is between December and March, and they lay about 45-65 eggs. “This time, 20 have hatched and another 45 will soon hatch one after another,” he said. The iguanas were vegetarians and usually feed on spinach, hibiscus, cactus and fruits, he added. Mr. Vijay’s iguanas are popular for they have appeared on TV programmes as well. Sometime ago, in a show on a leading Tamil channel, they played a role wherein participants had to identify the species. “We got permission from the Animal Welfare Board before shooting for the programme,” he added. Chennai WEDNESDAY, MAY 30, 2018 : Have you ever considered having an unlikely companion at home? Chennai certainly has eased up in terms of adopting or buying exotic pets that may send shivers down your spine, but for some families, the thrill of owning a pet that is unusual and challenging beats it all.
Vijay AR, a animal enthusiast by heart, has Orange, a bearded dragon, Spiky, a spiny-tailed iguana and Spikes, who is a yellow and red iguana. “After a researching about their natural habitat, diet and temperament, I adopted them. Owning them gratifies my fetish for reptiles,” he says. “Everyone was skeptical about the idea initially, but my kids, who are three and five years, have come to love, play with and feed them, proving that such pets are kid-friendly and probably the best gift you can give your children.” The reptiles have become celebrities, earning their owners fifteen minutes of fame. “Spiny has been used by Vijay TV for shoots and has starred in movies as well,” he says. The striking blue and gold prismatic plumage gives it away that our next exotic pet is a blue and yellow macaw, a free flight bird native to South and Central America. |

CHENNAI: Snakes may be a major predator of the South American (green) iguanas but, amid their sworn enemies, two of these lizards have become the new stars at Chennai Snake Park. Visitors tend to gawk at the exotic animal, which the snake park authorities purchased from a Velachery pet shop. (Tamed Pets)
The iguanas don't appear to care much about the attention. This composed demeanour of the green iguana makes it an ideal pet in many households. They are most spectacular when they extend their dewlap - folds of skin under the neck that they use to regulate body temperature, communicate and threaten adversaries-making them look like ' dilophosaurus' dinosaur.

‘Pets may get stressed out in hot weather, deserve special care’
Apr 26, 2024, 04.15 AM IST Chennai:
As it gets hotter by the day, pets are at risk. Veterinarians say that people should offer special care to pets to prevent them from getting stressed out because of the weather conditions. Dogs should be walked at dawn and dusk, and they should be hydrated. Soupy meals or small or frequent meals should be given to dogs, and a fruit-based diet should be given to birds. Talking about the dos and don'ts, veterinarian Josika Navukkarasu said heatwave conditions can cause stress among dogs.
Instead of taking the dogs for a walk during peak hours of the day, pet owners can walk their dogs before it is too hot or after sunset, she said.
Pedigree breeds such as great danes, labrador retrievers, siberian huskies, and st. bernards should be housed in an air-conditioned atmosphere to prevent heat stroke, she said. Excessive panting, disorientation, fatigue, and reddish mucus membranes are some of the symptoms of a pet dog being affected by heat stroke, she added.
It is not only dogs and cats; nowadays, people keep exotic pets at their homes. They too are exposed to the dangers of heatwave conditions, says Vijay A R, a pet shop owner in Velacherry.
Those who have reptiles as pets should soak them for a longer time during the summer months, and they should not be exposed to direct sunlight.
For the exotic birds, switching from a seed-based diet to a fruit-based diet will be helpful to increase their hydration. Spraying water on exotic birds during the morning and afternoon hours will help in avoiding heat stroke attacks, he said.

CHENNAI: As we climb the stairs leading to 98, Tharamani Road, Velachery, we are greeted by a dazzling blue and red macaw, two humongous iguanas and a couple of flying squirrels. Though it might seem so, it is not the set of a wildlife-themed feature film; it is the premises of Tamed Pets, the only exotic pet dealer in the city.
“We deal in a variety of exotic pets, from birds like eclectus parrot to reptiles like bearded dragons and iguanas,” says Vijay AR, owner and manager, whose tryst with bird-keeping began when he was 12. “I am not drawn to cats or dogs, unlike most people. Birds fascinated me and continue to do so till this day. I believe that I understand birds more than I understand human beings and vice-versa,” he smiles. Vijay started exclusively focusing on breeding exotic species when he turned 18, but it was only a couple of years back that he started Tamed Pets. “I was an IT professional, but quit because I knew that my passions lay somewhere else.” Vijay is quick to point out the legal aspects of keeping an exotic pet in India. “It is perfectly legal. According to the Indian Wildlife Protection Act 1972, we are not supposed to domesticate or breed wild species that are indigenous to India. That is why it is illegal to keep green parrots or even mynas as pets. Going by the law, did you know that we are not even supposed to catch butterflies? So what are these guidelines? “Exotic species that are not native to India or of Indian origin can be domesticated as long as they are not released into the wild. If they are released, interactions with other animals can cause an imbalance in the existing food chain, and these become ‘invaded species’ like the red-eared slider variety of turtles.” |
According to Vijay, what he is running cannot be really termed a commercial vocation because one cannot just ‘buy’ these exotic pets without meeting a few conditions. “We look at many factors. Can the client take care of the animal properly? What is their background? And we don’t seal the deal unless we’re satisfied with the answer,” says Vijay.
Vijay shares that Chennai pet owners are ‘starters’ when it comes to exotic species. “Chennaiites usually start with cockatiels or budgies, in the case of birds. There are people who directly choose iguanas too. Iguanas are best for Chennai climate…they need the extra warmth. We also tell clients how certain species require a different temperature and make sure they adhere to them carefully,” he avers.
Vacation pets
We recently introduced the concept of ‘vacation pets’, where clients can rent pets of their choice for a certain period. For example, children may want pets in their vacation time but may not be able to care for it afterwards. Keeping this in mind, we introduced this concept that is applicable in the case of select species and for a sum agreeable by the client.
